Kingfishers
Welcome to Kingfishers!
Kingfishers is our Year 1 and Year 2 class at Gretton and is made up of 24 children. In Kingfishers, Mrs Sollis and Mrs Denham are passionate about delivering an exciting curriculum, which is accessible and supportive to all children as learners. The children take part in structured activities alongside being given opportunities for learning through play, also known as Continuous Provision. Our aim is to help the children to develop their skills that enable them to become independent, reflective learners.
Meet the Kingfishers Team:
Kingfishers Class Teacher: Mrs Sollis
Kingfishers Class Teaching Assistant: Mrs Denham
Our Curriculum:
In the mornings, the children study Phonics (Little Wandle), Writing (Literacy Tree) and Maths (White Rose). In the afternoons, they focus on their foundation subjects which include RE, PSHCE, DT, Art, Science, History, Geography, Computing and Music (Kapow Scheme of work; PE - Get Set 4 Education).
Please do take the time to read the Class Letter and Kingfishers Topic Webs which share what your child is learning each term. These can be found at the bottom of the page and will be updated each term.
Phonics:
Our chosen SSP (Systematic Synthetic Phonics) is Little Wandle. In Year 1, we provide daily Phonics sessions to provide the children with the skills and knowledge to become confident early readers and writers. In Year 2, we complete the Little Wandle Spelling scheme ('Bridge to Spelling') and engage in revision sessions to further secure their knowledge.
You can find resources to help your child say their sounds and write their letters here: For parents | Letters and Sounds (littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk)
Literacy:
In Kingfishers, through the Literacy Tree scheme, we choose a range of different books each half-term, to engage children in their literacy learning. We are passionate about immersing children in the world of stories, to ensure purpose and enjoyment in the writing process. We set meaningful, exciting texts which inspire the children to become confident writers.
This year (25/26) we are excited to be launching a new handwriting scheme, called Letterjoin. These sessions will take place regularly throughout the school week to encourage children to form letters correctly, leading up to them learning how to fluently join their letters in preparation for Key Stage Two.
We are passionate about encouraging every child to read for pleasure and we encourage children to share books they are enjoying with the class. We find that sharing and discussion is a critical part in supporting all children to be readers for today and for the future. Children also take part in a 'Reading for Pleasure' assembly on a Thursday, where again we share a joy for reading across the school. 'Reading for Pleasure' might be reading with their friends, with children from other classes, or enjoying a story as a whole class.
Maths:
Maths is taught in small, sequential steps using the White Rose Maths programme of study. We have access to TTRockstars where children are encouraged to practice their timetables daily.

We highly encourage children to get a copy of the White Rose Homework books. These link directly to our lessons and are a fantastic way to consolidate their learning at the end of each week. Books can be bought off Amazon for around £5 each.
