Kingfishers

Welcome to Kingfishers

Kingfishers is our Year 1 and Year 2 class at Gretton and is made up of 30 children.  In Kingfishers, lots of fun learning happens. The children take part in lots of structured activities as well as being given opportunities for learning through play. We help the children develop their skills to become independent and reflective learners.

Our Curriculum:

We follow the National Curriculum. In the mornings, the children study reading, writing and maths and in the afternoons they focus on their foundation subjects (RE, RHE, DT, art, science, history, geography, PE, computing and music).

Phonics:
Our chosen SSP (Systematic Synthetic Phonics) is Little Wandle. In Year 1, we provide daily Phonics sessions to provide the children with the skills and knowledge to become confident early readers and writers. In Year 2, the children follow the Little Wandle Spelling Programme to develop their spelling knowledge.

You can find resources to help your child say their sounds and wite their letters here: For parents | Letters and Sounds (littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk)

Literacy:
In Kingfishers, we choose a different book each half-term to engage children in their literacy learning. We are passionate about immersing children in the world of stories to ensure purpose and enjoyment in the writing process. We set meaningful and exciting tasks for their children to engage them in their learning. The children study grammar each week and apply this to their written work. The children have a weekly handwriting lesson and take part in a range of 'Funky Fingers' activities each morning to strengthen their fingers.

Maths:
Maths is taught in small, sequential steps using the White Rose Maths programme of study. We have access to TTRockstars where children are encouraged to practice their timetables daily. We also have access to MyMaths, which we use to set weekly homework tasks.

Homework

Useful Information:
Phonics books are sent out every Friday and will need to be returned to school the following Monday. Sharing books are handed out every Friday and will need to be returned, ready to receive a new book, the following Friday

PE will take place on a Tuesday afternoon so children should come to school dressed in their PE kits on this day. During Autumn term 2, forest school will take place on a Thursday afternoon. The children may come to school dressed in warm clothing and bring waterproofs to change into.
