On Thursday, Owls' classroom was taken over by 29 young Vikings in some superb Viking costumes (thank you parents for your efforts!). Just as we were finishing our register though, our classroom was invaded by another Viking named Hrothgar. However, he turned out to be a friendly warrior and invited us down to his camp where he taught us about different aspects of Viking life. First he introduced us to some of the weapons they would have used, but also learnt that they were often used for day to day life with their hunting. We were given the chance to try on some of the helmets and feel the weight of the chain mail - it must have been exhausing trying to fight with all of that on!
We also were given a demonstration of how to light a fire in Viking times, along with how to put the fire out. Importantly, we also remembered all of the safety points around what to do if we discover a fire. Before lunch, we had great fun re-enacting a Viking story about some of the Viking gods.
After lunch, we learnt how to play the Viking game of Hnefatfl. It was quite tricky but good fun! Finally we re-enacted a Viking funeral and learnt that a person was often buried with their belongings and even their servants.
