Kingfishers have been writing stories based on one set long ago in China, about a boy who is given a magic paintbrush in return for his deeds of kindness. Whatever he paints becomes real, but the greedy emperor wants him to paint a field of gold. The boy is clever enough to paint the field on an island, so when the emperor sails to the island, his boat capsizes in a storm!

The children have written some inventive versions of this story with their own alternative settings, characters, problems and resolutions; including some rather dramatic endings such as the villain disappearing in sinking sand, being sucked up by a hoover and even whirled away in a tsunami!
